Challenge Manager User Guide

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for NIH challenge manager use of the Challenge Management Platform (CMP).

Getting Started


Create your account

To create a CMP account, you will first need a Researcher Auth Service (RAS) Identity Provider (IdP) account, specifically an NIH login, eRA Commons, or Login.gov account. Once you have an account with an IdP, you can register with the CMP following the steps below:

  • Click on the “Sign In / Register” button in the top right corner of the CMP homepage. You will be directed to the RAS sign-in page.
  • Select the NIH Login, eRA Commons, or Login.gov option and enter login credentials. The system will redirect you to the homepage after correctly entering your credentials.

Challenge Management


Initiate new challenge

Initiating a new challenge in CMP allows you to manage your challenge from start to finish, from reviewing submitted applications, to judging submitted solutions.

To create a new challenge that will appear on the CMP homepage, you will provide information about your challenge.

  • Log into CMP using your NIH Login, eRA Commons, or Login.gov credentials.
  • Select Challenge Management from the upper navigation bar. This will bring you to a dashboard with the status of all your in progress, submitted, and verified challenges.
  • Click on the “Initiate a new challenge” button. You will be directed to the Initiate Challenge form where you can provide information about your challenge.
  • Follow on-screen prompts and enter challenge details starting with Challenge Information.
  • After completing each section, click on the “Next” button at the bottom right of the page. You may also click on the “Save” button at the bottom of the page to save your work.
  • Once you have completed all sections, click on the “Submit” button at the bottom right of the page.
Challenge review by NIDDK Administrator

Allow a minimum of two (2) business days for your request to be reviewed and verified by the NIDDK Administrator for publishing. Based on the information you provided, NIDDK-CR Support Team will contact you with next steps and to schedule a meeting to discuss your challenge details with the NIDDK Administrator.

You will receive an email from the NIDDK-CR Support Team once your challenge information has been verified. Once verified, your challenge will automatically be published on the Target Publish Date that you entered when initiating your challenge. You view your live challenge from the CMP homepage and click on the Challenge Title to view details about your challenge.

Manage existing challenge

You can manage your verified challenges from the Challenge Management dashboard and perform actions, including review submitted applications, execute data use agreements, judge submitted solutions, and rank winners.

Judge Submitted Solutions
  • Log into CMP using your NIH Login, eRA Commons, or Login.gov credentials.
  • Select Scoring from the upper navigation bar. This will bring you to the Scoring page where you will enter scores for each participating team based on the judging rubric that you provided when initiating your challenge.
  • Select the Team Name dropdown to enter scores for that team. Click on the “Download Team's Solution Package” button to view the submitted solution.
  • Enter numeric scores for each judging criteria in the table under the Score column.
  • Internal comments entered by other judges will appear below the table at the bottom of the page.
  • You may disqualify a team by selecting the Disqualify Team checkbox below the judging criteria table. You will be required to also enter a reason in the “Reason for Disqualification” textbox.
  • After you have completed judging for a team, click on the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page to submit scores for that team.
