One major determinant of the marked rise in obesity and metabolic syndrome among children is the increased consumption of fructose (FRU). In adults, increased FRU consumption has been associated with increased liver injury, hepatic fibrosis, hyperuricemia, and complications of the metabolic syndrome of insulin resistance (i.e. obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension).
