General Description

The LABS-3 Psychosocial Issues and Bariatric Surgery study conducted an in-depth examination of the psychosocial aspects of surgery among a geographically, ethnically, and racially diverse sample of men and women undergoing bariatric surgery. The study had experts in the areas of psychopathology, eating behaviors, and quality of life to conduct a naturalistic study using state-of-the-art assessment tools, and documented the relationships among psychosocial factors over a three-year period to examine psychosocial predictors of surgical outcomes.

Primary Objectives

The primary objective was to prospectively assess psychosocial outcomes of bariatric surgery including examining psychological factors, feeding patterns, and eating problems in participants over time.

Secondary Objectives

The secondary objective was to evaluate psychopathological and behavioral variables that may impact outcomes and understand how these factors affect weight loss, weight regain, and psychosocial complications after surgery.

Outcome Measure

Outcome measures include changes in medical and psychosocial measures, and the mechanisms of psychosocial and eating behavior issues related to bariatric surgery.

Inclusion Criteria
  • Participants at least 18 years of age who undergo bariatric surgery by a LABS certified surgeon
  • Previous enrollment in LABS-1 and LABS-2
  • BMI of greater than or equal to 35
Exclusion Criteria
  • Informed consent not obtained
  • Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
  • Unlikely to comply with follow-up protocol (e.g., geographically inaccessible for study visits)
  • Unable to communicate with local study staff
Outcome

The study found that prevalence of any mental disorder was lower at years 4 and 5 post-surgery but not at 7 years. In addition, having a concurrent mood disorder was associated with greater weight gain post-surgery within the cohort. Other relationships between eating disorders, mental health, cognitive function, and bariatric surgery were variable.
